As part of the 3D discipline rotations, we are looking at wood. To start this project off we looked at objects that contained joints and hinges. This entailed having a group critique; using visual language and terminology. I then recorded these ideas below.
Before I went into the workshop it was important for me to see what I could achieve with the material and so to do this I created a Pinterest page that I could draw inspiration from to start making my own concept and imagine its practicality.
When it came to making my idea, it was very different to how I imagined it would be. Cutting the different lengths was straightforward but the joining of the different elements was a very different experience. I tried using the dowelling rod to start with but the fragile nature of the wood and the thinness of the dowelling meant that it snapped very easily. This lead to several different ideas bouncing around between me and the tech Dems. This lead to the proposal of making jump rings to connect the different pieces together. This worked well and was the technique that provided the best results.
