My two modules were Sustainable Artisan and Work Placement. These are two very different modules; the one looks at a specific method whereas the other looks at life after university. Sustainable artisan gave me the opportunity to look at steam bending and its history and benefits in the world of design and making. This is a technique that I have been wanting to try for a while and have always missed previous opportunities. For the work placement I went back to my previous art college where I did my foundation course in art and design. I initial asked if they knew anyone who would be willing to do a placement for a few weeks, however, they responded with an offer of doing it with them.
There were some key skills that I took away from the experience- Communication, Teamwork, Troubleshooting, and Adapting. In the first module I became ill which meant that my studio and workshop presence became very limited. I ran out of time to finish my piece before the Christmas break, I did however manage to get an extension, but with no access to the workshops I had to create my own steamer set up as well as source materials. This meant that I was problem-solving my designs without the support of those around me, but it also gave me the sense of independence which will be vital once I have left university. My second module however took me away from the university setting to the workplace. This meant I needed to develop a whole new way of communicating with those around me that was professional, as well as inviting. Working with young people meant that I was able to help them in different ways as well as communicate my knowledge that I have gained since I was their age.
Since field I have tried to make my work more thorough and thought out. Now I am updating my blog as regularly so that every stage of the process is noted and acknowledged. I have also realized the importance of CAD skills for the modern-day designer. Therefore, I have made a huge effort in making my designs digital. I also appreciate the importance and benefits of how planning can keep a project afloat, but also appreciate how fast thinking and adaptability is integral to all stages of the process. This is something I intend to be aware of from now on. I have always been apprehensive in new surroundings and with other people, these projects have both shown me that I can establish myself in new situations. A newfound sense of confidence is potentially the most important thing I can take away from these experiences. Another key thing that I gained from my work placement was an understanding of the benefits of a community presence, and so I hope to one day use my skills to give back to my local and global community.
Ethical
A desire to create a practice that reclaims existing materials and takes into consideration the affect its work has on the environment. This was enhanced by the exploration of steam bending.
Digital
Working on computer-based design, which will help translate work to both clients and manufacturers. Also aim to achieve a strong online presence including social media and a website to show what I am about.
Global
A presence in my local and design community. Created by the desire to communicate and provide the same if not better opportunities than I have experienced.
Entrepreneurial
Using the two experiences to inspire the creation of my own business, using the connections and skills developed throughout the processes I was shown.
