The first rotation on my foundation course was a very stimulating one. At the beginning of the week I wasn’t entirely sure where it was going. We looked at the alphabet and how we can make it in an interesting and unique way. With the alphabet being a set thing I struggled to think of a way that I could change it to make it my own; so I decided to document my journey to college and find elements of the alphabet on the route and then once I was in the building I tried to make the alphabet with the objects I had in my bag. The results of both of these was very mixed, some of the images were quirky and used shadows and curves to form the letters, whereas others were just bland.
Here are two cinemagraphs that i had created in the workshop. These are just examples and demonstrations to show what works as a cinemagraph and what doesn’t.
Above is my cinemagraph. It is obviously very rough and could do with being redone. However, it has helped me to see what elements need to change this idea to be successful. The key areas for its failure are the movement of the subject no matter how many times I tried I couldn’t isolate the vapour without getting a portion of his face moving, this resulted in me just allowing his whole body to move, which even though it is jumpy looks better than it did before. A way of making the process seem smoother would be to have the camera at a different angle so that I could have the profile instead, allowing for a cleaner finish.
